Words:

To start:
Jump, jump, jump Jim Joe
Shake your head and nod your head. and tap your toe.
Round round and round we go
Then you *clap your hands together and you Jump Jim Joe
The dance:
Jump, jump, jump Jim Joe
Shake your head and nod your head. and tap your toe.
Round round and round we go
Then you choose another partner and you never say no repeat as necessary
Choose another partner and off we go!
Repeat

Context:

This is a brilliant action song which works very well with pre-schoolers. We had great fun singing this one in Meadows room in Battle Hill nursery this week. The weather was so glorious, we sang this outside.

To start with I would lead this as an action song in a circle, changing the actions in the last line. When everyone has the hang of it, try it as a snowball dance. Two children pair up in the middle and dance the song together, holding each others’ hands.  For ’round round’ they dance around in their own little circle. During the last line, the two in the middle separate and each choose a new dancing partner from the circle to bring into the centre to dance with them. There are now four dancers. Repeat until everyone is dancing. It may take a little practice with three and four year olds, but they will get it in the end. It is an excellent song to help practice turn-taking in a safe environment.

Once the children are confident, encourage them to play and sing this themselves.

This is a traditional song which I was taught by the Amidons way back in 2003.
